Types of Security Seals by Level of Protection

Types of Security Seals

Though our world is changing and everyone is advancing, we still take extreme measures to secure ourselves. The same goes for organizations as well. There are new cases of counterfeit products in the market every day, due to which companies are switching to advanced physical and digital security.

Moreover, we need security seal for protection mainly when products are in transit, because that’s when intruders try to steal them. That’s why, you need to select a combination of physical and digital seals, better known as phygital seals, that can provide double security.

But, there are different types of seals present in the market, so how to choose the best one?

As stated above, a combination of physical and digital security seal will work wonders for your company. Besides, there are different types of seals present in the category of phygital seals, about which we are going to discuss here.

Physical Security Seals

Physical security seals have been in the market for decades, and though they do serve the purpose of securing cargo, tanks, and couriers, they are unreliable.

Why? That’s because you can easily open a physical security seal with minimum tools, steal goods, and replace it easily with another replica.

Gray markets are filled with all types of locks. Whether you want a simple strap seal, bolt locks, or an adjustable one, these markets will give you everything.

Thanks to such markets, thieves can easily find a replica, perform the crime, and no one can know a single thing.

Does that mean you should never use physical seals? No! There are still some companies that produce excellent physical security seals, for which you can’t find a replica. You just need to look for them properly in the market.

However, these kind of seals are only designed for everyday use, like securing bags, meters, etc., and not for complex supply chains as they cannot provide double security like phygital seals.

Phygital Security Seals

The result of combining physical seals with digitization and advanced technology makes phygital seals. These kinds of seals provide the highest level of protection and are suggested for inland transit both locally and internationally.

Below are some of the most famous phygital seals that are widely used for their high security and other benefits.

#1 RFID e-Seal

It’s clearly known that mechanical bolt seals are used for securing cargo tanks, drums, and other similar packages. These security seals are difficult to open without leaving any signs of tampering. However, illegitimate dealers and thieves have found ways to open bolt seals and glue them back or replace them so that no one can suspect anything. And, when you get to know about the loss, it’s already too late.

But what if we combine mechanical bolt seals with RFID technology? It would become impossible to tamper with the seal without alerting the company. RFID e-seals also provide a unique TID number that adds an extra security layer.

The biggest advantage of RFID e-seal is that it can only be opened with the help of a metal-cutter, meaning it’s a one-time use kind of seal. You cannot use the e-seal once it’s opened because the seal status will show “Tampered” after it’s scanned and cut.

Besides, if you use RFID e-seal, you can get real-time alerts about the package, like its exact location, ticked check-posts, approximate time of arrival, etc. Moreover, you can even share the tracking link with stakeholders to keep them in the loop about the products.

#2 Logi-E Strap Seals

Strap seals are mostly used in e-commerce logistics, supermarkets, courier agencies, etc. Though these seal types will show signs of tampering if they are forcefully opened, it’s quite easy to find their lookalikes in the market.

That’s why, Sepio created RFID-implemented strap seals, known as Logi-E. It serves a double purpose by providing physical security and digital track and trace solutions. An RFID-enabled QR code is added to the strap seal, making it possible for brands to track the packages digitally instead of depending on manual data.

Logi-E strap eliminates the possibility of replication in the market, thus decreasing the chances of theft and pilferage. Moreover, you don’t have to manually check the packages at the final destination to match the numbers with the initial data.

#3 TruCheck

Roto seals are used for all kinds of valves, tankers, drums, and meters. Thanks to their encased security, breaking or opening these seals without leaving any signs is quite impossible.

But, when you combine IOT technology with roto seals, the security level of the seal double folds. The implementation of IoT in the security seal helps you get real-time alerts about whether the seal is intact or not. Moreover, you can also add geofence in TruCheck to get notified if the packages are going outside the desired locations. It would help you take necessary actions without wasting any time.

#4 LogiSmart

While RFID e-seal is a passive one-time security seal, LogiSmart is an active security seal. Simply put, you can use these security seals multiple times for several purposes. In addition, these locks are designed in a way so that only a single person will have access to open it.

LogiSmart locks are connected to software where access is given to only one person in the company. Until the said person approves, the lock will not open. If anyone tries to break open the lock, it will immediately send notifications to the company.

LogiSmart security seals are widely used because they are cost-efficient, reusable, reliable, and highly secure. You cannot simply break the lock without notifying a bunch of people.

While dealing with brand protection, companies should first invest in proper security seals.

Though there are several seal types available in the market, you must check if the plastic seals are made of good quality, durable, and fit into your requirements or not. Also remember that plastic security seals are categorized as per their level of protection, complexity, and much more.
